My {Pretty -n- Pink} Valentine's Day Wreath

While blogging around the other day I came across this Whimsical Valentine's Day Wreath that I thought was so cute!

Jen, at Tater Tots and Jello (don't ya love that blog name?!) always comes up with the cutest crafts.  Anyways, I thought I try to make one with fabric.

I picked up these fabrics from JoAnn's (my home away from home) and got right to work.

{I'm thinkin' that table needs a coat of paint.}

MATERIALS:
~fabric
~pinking shears- preferably sharp
~ruler
~hot glue gun
~knitting needle
~styrofoam wreath- 12 inch

STEP 1:
Cut out 50 100 150 4" x 4" squares

STEP 2:
Poke a knitting needle into {BUT NOT THROUGH!} the middle of a fabric square and apply some hot glue to the tip.

STEP 3:
Poke the fabric INTO the styrofoam about 1/4 inch.

and just keep gluing and gluing and gluing...

Here's the first 50 squares I cut {which I thought for sure would be enough.}

So I cut 50 more.
Still not even close to enough.

Then I decided that my mom's {love ya mom} 40 year old pinking shears were just not gonna cut it anymore. So back to JoAnn's I go.  And I got THESE:
and then cut 25 more
AHHHHHHHHHH.
How did I ever cut the first 100 with those other scissors?
Maybe that would explain the blisters on my fingers.
So I cut 25 MORE, 'cause I could.
A total of 150 squares. {Did you know I used to teach math.}

And finally, ended up with this:

Such a happy sight to come home to!
Smile.
I loved the fabric from this wreath so much that I decided to make a
Valentine's Day Banner from it too!

  1. I would jasco the table top then sand with 50 grit then 220 grit, then apply clear Watco using a fine steel wool.

  2. Thanks Caughlin Ranch for the refinishing tips. I'm not sure I'll keep it the natural wood color or paint it a fun (or white) color. Painting seems to my style right now.

That glue gun is the next best thing to duct tape. I have some neon pink duct tape if you ever want to borrow some. . .

  6. I LOVE the wreath!!! Would you mind sharing how much of each style of fabric you purchased? I think I want to try this and am a little clueless on figuring up what I would need! Love you blog!

  7. What a gorgeous wreath! It almost inspires me to go out and buy pinking shears (thanks for the nod)!

  8. Umm...hello...Fabulous fabulous!
I'm in the process of acquiring holiday decor that do NOT fall in the line with CHristmas or thanksgiving. This would be a great start! THanks for sharing!

  9. Ah, thanks EVERYONE for all the sweet comments. Gave me warm fuzzies this chilly AM.

HOW MUCH FABRIC: sorry I didn't include that info...I used close to a half yard of each and there were 5 fabrics, so 2.5 yards....but I have a LITTLE left over for the Valentine's Banner I'm making, stay tuned! I'd suggest you get a total of 2.5 yards.

  13. If you want to save your hands the cutting pain they do have a rotary cutter with a pinking shear blade you can use...!

    ReplyDelete
  14. Oh, thanks for that tip, Patty! I have been looking into getting a rotary cutter lately. I'm probably the only one left without one! I'll probably pick one up the next time I have a 50% off coupon at one of the craft stores! A pinking shear cutter would have been perfect for my ruffled towels to prevent fraying.

  23. i LOVE your wreath!! It is probably way easier to store without getting all squished and wrinkly. I am totally going to find a holiday to do this for. I wish we had a JoAnn Fabrics in Charlotte (I grew up down the street from a JoAnn ETC and it was AWESOME!)

    ReplyDelete
  24. (and by way easier to store, I mean vs the cupcake liner wreath which I fear would not be as cute the 2nd year!)

  25. I have to make one of these! Thanks for the tutorial!

  26. That is so pretty! I love how it turned out. I need to break down and buy some pinking shears, but they're so expensive. I had the same problem of having to use more and more and more when I made a balloon wreath for a birthday party.

  27. I love the wreath and the banner! Great tutorials!!!

  28. Such a cute wreath! Now I need to go get some pinking shears....

  29. Do you know the names of thsoe fabrics or the JoAnn numbers.....?

    ReplyDelete
  30. What a beautiful wreath and great way to use up the fabric stash!

    ReplyDelete
  31. since you taught math, and I'd like to know how much fabric I need so I don't have to go back to Joann ;) how many yards did you use? 150 * 4x4 pieces = ??

    ReplyDelete
  32. How much fabric? GOOD QUESTION!
I'd get 2 yards and you should have plenty to make 150 squares that are 4x4 inches each. You'll have a bit left over, but better to have a tad extra than be 1/4 yard short and have to go back to the fabric store (unless you love excuses to go to the fabric store, heee heee!)
